Oven Dried Orange Slices
Dried oranges add that touch of whimsy and vintage charm that everyone wants this time of year.
Not only are they an easy to make, it’s extremely inexpensive! Use your dried orange slices as cute attachments to gifts, add a ribbon and make an ornament, or string them up for a garland. So many possibilities!
Drying orange slices has been on my holiday to-do list for years now. We finally got around to it this year, and I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out! It really is one of the easiest things to do that can be done during the holiday season, or really anytime of year.
Things you’ll need:
oranges (I probably got close to 8 slices per medium sized orange)
knife/cutting board (a mandolin could be helpful too, but not necessary)
Preheat your oven to the lowest temperature possible, no higher then 200 degrees Fahrenheit. We have a vintage oven and just set it on low, which teetered between 150 and 180 degrees.
Cut your oranges into slices. Discard the ends.
The thinner the slices, the more delicate they look and faster they dry. Most websites and blogs recommend going about 1/4” thick, but I did some thinner and thicker. No difference, just takes longer to dry the thicker they are. I used both a knife and a mandolin and found that a good ole fashion knife was the best. Remember, they don’t have to be perfect, so don’t fret if the shape is a little off after cutting them.
Line your baking sheet with foil (not needed, but easier clean up) and place the wire rack on top.
Arrange the slices on top of the rack, making sure to leave a little bit of space between them for air to circulate.
Place them in your oven (middle rack seems to be best!) and let them bake! Make sure to leave your oven cracked to let the moisture out the entire time. I checked on mine every hour or so to flip them. The thinnest of slices were done in about 2 hours, the thicker slices took up to 6 hours.
Remove them from the oven and let them cool. We ended up leaving ours out over night on the rack, after finishing around 8:30pm, and woke up to them perfectly dry and ready to be used!
A few little tidbits to keep in mind…
The thinner they are and the longer you leave them in, the higher chance they will curl. Some like them curled, some don’t, so just a heads up!
I’m a fan of the range in colors you get when drying oranges. Some turned out a little darker (some might call them burnt), but I really love the depth in color. Play with times and take them out when you like the look of them.
